At first reserved for the designation of the “semi-froth champagne”, the term crémant used for some time now is reserved since 4 July 1975 (decree under French law n°75 577) to designate the mousseux wines with an appellation of origin.
This was taken up again in the EC texts in 1992.
The term crémant is therefore defined vis-à-vis the EC countries.
