Wine growing surface area: 20 000 hectares
Production: 51 400 000 litres
Total wine consumption in 2003: 58 300 000 litres
Main production areas:
- Malokarpatska (Carpathians): 6 032 hectares
- Juznoslovenska (Southern Slovakia): 6 118 hectares
- Nitrianska (Nitra region): 4 138 hectares
- Stredoslovenska (Central Slovakia): 2 596 hectares
- Vychodoslovenska (Eastern Slovakia): 1 720 hectares
- Tokajska (Tokay): 1 543 hectares
The sparkling wines market:
- Three producers of sparkling wines operate in Slovakia: Hacaj SRO (10 000 bottles) , Hubert J.E. and Vino Nitra (350 000 bottles).
- Consumption: 1 to 2 bottles per year per person. This is a low figure, therefore companies in the Slovak wine sector do not want to invest in developing the production of sparkling wines.
- 20 to 30 % of sparkling wine is consumed over Christmas and the New Year.
- Exports of sparkling wines totalled de 114 700 litres in 2004.
- Imports totalled 321 300 hl in the same year 2004. Sparkling wines accounted for 2 % of imported wines.
Techniques used in producing sparkling wines:
- Traditional method, in bottles.
- "Charmat" method (in large pressure-resistant tanks).
